Scary Scean

As the whistle in the darkness roared I boarded the old, rusty beast. Looking the creature in the eye, I figured it was just one of the other passengers. But as his gaze got closer fear rushed into my body. For this was no human being at all, but a walking nightmare. With eyes like black holes, chills rushed through my body. I tried screaming nothing came out. I tried running, but it was as if my legs were not even there. I just stood there like a manikin in a store window. As the beast came closer I opened my eye to see that it was just a nightmare. Now getting over the nightmare I discovered that I was late for school.

My Personal Metaphor

Authors Notes: In class we wrote a personal metaphor about what we feel we are.

I am an actress stuck in the crowd waiting to be found

I am a caring person like a dog liking your face

I am a volleyball player spiking the problems of life

I am a happy person like a kid in a candy store

"The Star" by Ester Claes

Imagine if were living in a world that was in war and you were a supper star. The main character in "The Star" by Esther Claes had experienced just that. Each day the world would get worse with sickness, diseases, and radiation poisoning would keep spreading though the whole country. More and more people were losing their homes because they could not pay for all the bills. This short story follows the tragic plot line through its plot line characteristics and lesson.

In the story "The Star" the first plot is the world is in conflict for the main character. The U.S. has started a war and is going towards LA where the main character, who I will call Chloe, lives. Following that the story leads into a rise to power which in this story is Chloe does not let the bad things ruin too much of her day. Next we discover a tragic flaw Chloe's parents are getting sick. Chloe is getting sacred, she does not want to be alone in the scary time. Soon the story comes to a tragic fall Chloe knows that her parents are sick and she does not want to believe it so when her parents are calling for her most likely for help she ignores the calls for help. Finally the story comes to an end with death or death symbolism Chloe gives up and falls asleep hoping that tomorrow will be back to normal with her agent getting a photo shot with a magazine for her. But who knows she may not wake up.

Although the plot line shows us how the story goes the characteristic help us just as much. One characteristic is that the main character is in control of her actions. Chloe is in control of that she is not going to listen to her parents. She will think that everything is alright but in reality it is not. The last characteristic is that the story is realistic. This story is defiantly realistic through all of its plots.

As you can see the short story "The Star" by Ester Claes follows the tragic mode of literature though its plot line, characteristics and lesson. The purpose of the story is to learn from others mistakes .

The lesson of this story is that no matter what happens you should make the best of it. Chloe knew that something was wrong and it was going to get worse but she just kept complaining and wouldn’t help or do anything.

Summer

Have you ever wanted summer to come early? I know I have especially in winter. When I am waiting for summer I think of the sand in between my toes and the ocean or lake cooling me down. I also think of think of how it is going to be warm out and I will be able to not be pale anymore. When I think summer I think no school which is nice because you don’t have to worry about homework and you can hang out with friends a lot more then you normally can. I love summer.

Story Starter

When I was young I remember one thing very clearly. This was about 4 or 5 years ago when I went to Canada. I was so excited because we were going to go under to falls it was going to be so cool. My family and I were staying in a really nice condo place and they had a pretty nice pool for my brothers and me. We were small and the pool was small so it was just right but when I was walking over to do a pencil dive I stepped on one of the white circle caps that cover the drain. Normally they do not open when they are stepped on and so this one did so my whole foot and ankle were all cut up and I was in a lot of pain.

I was crying for a long time about an hour because it hurt so badly. So I had to have my foot and ankle all bandaged up. The cuts and gashes were so big that I had to have gauze and bandages all over me foot and ankle. On this trip we were going to be walking a lot. We were sightseeing and doing lots of walking in zoos and other parks. Since we were walking and I could not be in to stroller because of my little brother the cuts and gashes hurt even more because of my shoe rubbing on them. But I stuck out the pain and did not complain too much because I did not want to make the trip miserable for anyone else. When my family and I got home we went to the Milwaukee zoo and my dad gave me a really big stuff polar bear. Since I was so little I named him Polar I wasn’t very creative. But I still have him and he always goes on my bed. I used to think that when I was away a school he would watch my room and keep it safe.

This helped me learn not to step on the white filter caps. But I have accidently stepped on a few once and they did not open. I also learn that if I am in pain or something bad has happened to me it doesn’t mean that I have to make the people around me feel bad for me or get annoyed by the complaining. But I still think that Canada is a beautiful place and fun.

Spring

Spring when I think of spring I think of warmth and winter is finally over. I also think of car accidents that I don’t like to think about. When spring comes I get so excited because my family and I always go somewhere warm, fun and exciting like Mexico or Florida. This year we are going to Florida. I can’t wait because we are staying in a really nice place and they have a great pool. This year I need to get a tan on the beach because I am really pale. But we are driving there so I don’t want to get in another car accident because last time we went to Florida we were in a really bad car accident so I don’t want that to happen. I can’t wait for the sand to come in between my toes.

"The Card" essay responds

Imagine if you saw your dad only once and he gave you something which was a card for your tenth birthday.  This is exactly what happened to the main character in the book "The Card" by James Ross.  Mickey, the main character was curious most of the story because he wanted to know why his dad had put a quote in his tenth birthday card that said "no one's got your back"(2).  The short story "The Card" follows the Comedy mode of literature through its plot line, characteristics, symbolism and the lesson.

In the story "The Card" by James Ross the plot line follows the comedic mode of literature.  "The Card" starts off with normal everyday life.  Mickey the main character and his family were sitting around the table talking about their day.  However the story leads into a conflict when Mickey wants to know more about his dad and his mom won't tell him anything.  Now the only way Mickey can get information about his father is through his sister.  Soon the conflict is realized fully when Mickey discovers that the only words from his father are words of advice: "no one's got your back"(2).  When Mickey's mother has found a new boyfriend and Mickey knows he is not a good person and has problems, he cannot convince his mom to believe him.  That is when he then realized that his father was right all along. After that the conflict was resolved by Mickey finally convinced his mother that her boyfriend was bad.  Finally Mickey and his family are back at their table talking about their day which ends the story with normalcy.

Although the plot line was important the characteristics and symbolism is just important. Two characteristics in a comedy are realism and is the main character in control.  This story was realistic.  One reason is because there is nothing really odd and lots of people have parents that are divorced.  The main character is in control in that he could solve all his problems with almost no help.  There also was some symbolism in this story a few of them are that this story took place in the summer time.  Also in this story the family was around the kitchen table.

As you can see the comedic mode of literature was very clear.  This story easily followed the plot line, characteristics and the symbolism to easily prove this mode of literature.  The lesson of this story was a good one and we need to know that no one has your back for you even sometime you can’t even trust your family that is a scary thought.

"The Lottery" essay response

Imagine if you lived in a town where the lottery prize was death. In the story "The lottery" by Shirley Jackson there was a town that did exactly that. This lottery happened every year for a while now. Almost everyone in the town did not like this special kind of lottery. In this town and many others in the area the prize of the lottery was you would be stoned to death. If you compared that to real life that sounds really harsh. While the story is highly unrealistic there are some similarities not only between the main character and I but also with the lottery in the book and in real life.

In the book “The Lottery” the main character Mrs. Hutchinson and I are a little alike but we are also very different. For example we are a like in that we both don’t want anything bad to happen. However I know that it is only human nature to want only good things to happen. Mrs. Hutchinson does not want to win the lottery because she and her family don’t want to die because that would be devastating. That is exactly what I would feel like if that happened to my family. On the other hand we are also different. One important way we are different is that we both like to fight to make something better; however I have never fought for a life or death situation like Mrs. Hutchinson. Before she died, Mrs. Hutchinson was making excuses to not win the lottery sadly she did not win that fight.

Although Mrs. Hutchinson and I have similarity the lottery in this story is very different then our lottery today. Our lottery today goes like this you buy a ticket and then you see if you win and the prize you receive is something you want. But the lottery in the short story was total different you would get a horrible surprise the surprise is that the towns people stone you to your death if you win. It is hard to think that people in the town would buy a lottery ticket if they knew there was a chance that they would die. That makes no sense. As you can see these two lotteries are nothing alike.

In conclusion, while I could relate myself to the main character and the idea of the lottery this story is highly unrealistic because no one wanted to win this lottery. If you compared your life to Mrs. Hutchinson’s life you could see that your life isn’t that bad. Shirley Jackson wrote this book to make a statement and the statement is things aren’t as always as they seem.
